UK Government launches fund to help farmers manage water resources.
The UK government has launched a £1.6 million fund to support groups of farmers in managing water resources to combat drought and ensure food security. The fund will finance approximately 20 studies exploring various water management methods, including multi-farm reservoirs, treated waste-water recycling, and water trading and sharing schemes. This initiative follows the Prime Minister's Farm to Fork Summit commitment to enhance local water resource schemes, supporting food production and building resilience against water scarcity.
Water Minister Robbie Moore emphasized the importance of water storage for dry periods to sustain food production and farm business resilience. Environment Agency Chief Executive Philip Duffy highlighted the growing need for water due to climate change, increased demand, and environmental protection, estimating an additional 5 billion litres daily by 2050.
The fund aims to expand successful projects like the Felixstowe Hydrocycle, which repurposes excess drainage water for irrigation, and the Lincoln Water Transfer, where 19 farms share a water abstraction license for flexible land and water use. The Environment Agency will collaborate with farmers and other stakeholders to integrate agricultural needs into Regional Water Resources Plans, enhancing overall water resource efficiency and supporting a robust farming sector. This funding complements existing government measures, such as the Water Management Grant and ambitious leakage reduction targets for water companies.
