What will the UK new Labour Government’s plans mean for the water industry?
On 5th., July, Keir Starmer’s Labour Party has won a landslide victory in the UK election. “We did it!” he said in his victory speech. “Change begins now.” But what change can we expect to see for the UK water industry, as the new government takes charge?
In Labour's 2024 manifesto, they identified the climate and nature crisis as the paramount global challenge. Their strategy centers on the Green Prosperity Plan, emphasizing clean energy, future industries, and strengthening the green economy.
Regarding the nation's water, Labour's manifesto pledged to address the 'nature emergency' by tackling river and sea pollution, enhancing access to nature, promoting biodiversity, and safeguarding landscapes and wildlife.
In March, Labour's sewage pollution plan criticized water industry bonuses and vowed to end them, aiming to tackle what they called 'failing' water companies. Their plan involved giving regulators authority to block bonuses, imposing criminal charges on bosses for repeated law-breaking, mandating independent monitoring of all water outlets, and enforcing significant fines for sewage discharge violations.
As we welcome in a new leader, only time will tell if the the UK water industry can welcome in a new era.
